Lisa McIntosh, Director, Income, Employment and Homelessness Support, Region of Durham provided a PowerPoint presentation regarding 1635 Dundas Street East - Phase 2 Community Engagement. Highlights of the presentation included:
- statistics and demographics relating to homelessness in Whitby;
- a history of 1635 Dundas Street East including implementation of 45 emergency shelter beds completed during Phase 1 of the project;
- an overview of Phase 2 of the project, including community engagement efforts and feedback;
- demographics of the community engagement survey respondents;
- community feedback on the integration of the 1635 Dundas Street East shelter into the local community;
- programs identified by survey respondents for expansion or enhancement;
- the proposed concept plans for the shelter;
- strategies for addressing community needs and concerns during implementation of Phase 2 of the project; and,
- an exhibition hosted by Station Gallery to showcase art created at the 1635 Dundas Street East shelter.
A question and answer period ensued between Members of Council and Lisa McIntosh regarding:
- whether expanding services will increase the prevalence of homelessness in the community;
- a comparison between the existing shelters and other homelessness supports in Ajax and Whitby;
- whether complaints have been received from local businesses regarding the 1635 Dundas Street East shelter;
- demographics of the individuals seeking homelessness supports in Durham Region;
- the number of individuals on the Durham By-Name List;
- initiatives and outreach programs to address community and business concerns;
- clarification regarding the types of concerns raised by the residents and business owners;
- whether the community engagement results will be presented in a report to Regional Council;
- strategies for encouraging participation in the community survey and clarification regarding the survey methodology;
- the Phase 2 cost estimate;
- whether the project will receive HART Hub funding;
- examples of the ongoing community engagement efforts following conclusion of the survey; and,
- efficiencies and best practices identified by the Region of Durham throughout the project.
